Pest Wildlife Projects
Pest wildlife cause disturbance and damage trees and gardens, even in suburban areas.
Pest wildlife solutions include trapping and removing specific animals or using wide area control to reduce pest wildlife populations. This works best when combined with a monitoring programme that can quickly measure the success of control and target specific areas. Read about some of our recent pest wildlife projects below.

Pest: Possum
Location: Rental property, Mt Wellington, Auckland
The Problem
A possum using the house roof space as a daytime den. Early morning possum screaching and the noise of animal movements woke the residents and frightened their young children.
Pest Assessment
Our Pest Assessment identified several trees the possum used to climb onto the house roof, however the homeowner was reluctant to prune these to deny the possum access. Pruning trees still left the possum in residence and removal was preferred.
Our Solution
Possum traps baited with a favourite food and a lure scent were set at each tree used by the possum to climb onto the roof. Bait was refreshed every few days and the possum was captured and removed.

Pest: Rats and Possums
Location: Lifestyle property, Stillwater, Orewa
The Problem
Rats and possums damaging fruit and vegetables in a large garden with a small orchard.
Pest Assessment
Our Pest Assessment confirmed well established pest wildlife populations of rats and possums living in the forested parts of the property and obvious movement routes onto the property from neighbouring areas through shelterbelts and coastal mangroves.
Our Solution
A carefully arranged network of poison bait stations was established throughout the property and feed with control bait. Bait station placement and bait choice prevented non-target species from having access to the poison. Regular monitoring of bait take and bait replenishment identified 'hotspots' of pest wildlife activity and movement routes and confirmed that a good level of pest wildlife control was achieved.

Pest: Possums
Location: Residential gardens, Mt Eden, Auckland
The Problem
Possums living in large trees along the rear of the property were causing damage to gardens and fruit trees as they searched for food. The noise of possums running over roofs disturbed residents and neighbours.
Pest Assessment
Our Pest Assessment identified a good supply of natural food and our safety assessment identified the risk of children being exposed to traps. Neighbours' pet dogs ruled out the use of poison bait due to the risk of secondary poisoning from pets eating a possum carcass.
Our Solution
To ensure safety, possum traps were set off the ground on a flat roof garden shed. The traps were prebaited with a favoured food to compete against the natural food supply. When this indicated possums were feeding, the traps were set and a number of possums removed from the property.
