Pest insect solutions may involve spraying or baiting to control insects. Read about some of our recent pest insect projects below, or click on the insect names above. We have also successfully dealt with:

Pest insect management may include assessment trapping to determine the extent of a pest insect infestation, direct control to remove the unwanted insects and monitoring trapping to check they do not become re-established.

    Pest: Fleas

Location: Commercial offices, Manukau city centre

    The Problem

Staff on the fifth floor of the building were experiencing flea bites and increased cleaning and vacuuming had failed to control the problem.

    Pest Assessment

Our Pest Assessment confirmed the affected area extended over half the carpeted floor, plus a staff common room. Staff had been bitten on the lower legs, confirming the floor was the main flea harbourage, but some people reported bites around their waist, indicating fabric chairs also had fleas.

    Our Solution

We co-ordinated our flea treatment with the client's cleaners so the treatment was applied after a vigourous carpet vacuum. We worked after hours, to minimise disruption to the office and to give the treatment time overnight to dry on the carpet without disturbance.

As fleas have a four stage life cycle we applied a combined residual treatment to kill adult fleas and their larvae. The residual action provided protection for several months and the spray was extended over the whole affected area plus a buffer area to guard against fleas infesting unaffected parts of the floor.

    Pest: German Wasps

Location: Private home, St Heliers, Auckland

    The Problem

A large wasp colony had a nest amongst climbers on a garden fence next to the family's swimming pool. Large numbers of wasps were present and landscape contractors had identified the nest as a safety hazard that needed to be removed so they could work safely.

    Pest Assessment

Our Pest Assessment identified the nest could be much larger than it appeared and may have extended into the cavities of the concrete block wall. Predicted frequent rain made the use of insecticidal dust impractical.

    Our Solution

We sprayed a solvent based broad spectrum liquid insecticide into the nest entrances and onto the outside of the nest. This does not evaporate and penetrates deeply into the nest to kill adult wasps and larvae. Wasps that escaped from the nest died quickly and wasps returning to the nest died when they landed on the nest. Once inactive, the nest was removed from the fence.

    Pest: Cockroaches

    Location: Community organisation offices, Mangere

    The Problem

Cockroaches discovered on desks in an open plan office.

    Pest Assessment

Our Pest Assessment confirmed the source on the infestation was a second hand fridge recently moved into the offices. Cockroaches were harbouring behind the fridge around the electric motor for warmth.

    Our Solution

We applied cockroach gel bait around the fridge motor and along the skirting of adjacent walls to control the cockroaches. Other areas of the office were treated with a surface spray to control cockroaches that may have already spread to other areas.

    Pest: Spiders

    Location: Private home, Awhitu

    The Problem

A recently built home was extensively covered with web spinning spiders on exterior weatherboards and window frames.

    Pest Assessment

Our Pest Assessment confirmed that spiders had colonised the timberwork and aluminium window frames around the house and the rough sawn weatherboards provided extensive harbourage sites for the spiders.

    Our Solution

The whole exterior of the house was treated with a residual insecticide that was sprayed onto the spider webs. As the spiders were safe in their refuges it was difficult to spray them directly so by applying the treatment to their webs they came into contact with the insecticide when they moved onto their webs. The webs were then cleaned off about a week after the treatment was applied.
