We deal with a wide range of pest birds including:

Pest bird solutions may involve birdproofing, exclusion, trapping or control of excessive bird numbers. Read about some of our recent pest bird projects below, or click on the bird names above. We have also successfully dealt with:

If you need to exclude birds from perching or nesting on buildings and structures then our Thorny Devil bird spikes may be the solution you need. You can fit them yourself, or have us do it for you. We can also design and erect custom built bird net systems, or structural bird proofing as required.

    Pest Bird: Sparrows

    Location: Distribution centre, Penrose, Auckland

    The Problem

Large numbers of sparrows entering the warehouse and soiling supermarket food crates.

    Pest Assessment

Our Pest Assessment confirmed the problem was a combination of issues:

    • sparrows using the roof for roosting and soiling crates below
    • sparrows nesting behind the building foil under the roofing
    • sparrows feeding from leftover food in stored crates

Birds were gaining unimpeded access to the building through gaps along the guttering where the walls joined with the roof.

    Our Solution

Feeding stations confirmed sparrows were not using the building as a primary food source. Instead they were moving outside to feed using the guttering gaps to enter and exit at will. Using control bait distributed to mimic natural food sources the local sparrow population was rapidly suppressed by targeting those birds who knew how to enter the building. A monitoring programme independantly confirmed that more than 90% of birds were successfully removed.

    Pest Bird: Pigeons

Location: Cafes and restaurants, Auckland Waterfront

    The Problem

Pigeons entering cafe's and other premises to eat food dropped from tables. Pigeons also perched on outside ferniture causing extensive soiling.

    Pest Assessment

Our Pest Assessment confirmed the pigeons were a discrete flock of birds living in a territory around the buildings that housed the cafes and restaurants. They roosted on adjoining roofs causing severe soiling and unpleasant odours.

    Our Solution

The site was heavily used by the public so pigeons were captured using a trailer mounted cage trap placed in a carpark and prebaited for several days. When the trap was on-site a public notice explaining the trapping programme. After each session the trailer was covered and towed away so birds could be moved to their destination.

    Pest Bird: Starlings

Location: Vehicle depot, Mt Wellington, Auckland

    The Problem

Starlings were night roosting in the open structure of a building canopy and repeatedly soiling cars parked below. A previously installed bird exclusion net had to be removed as it did not comply with fire regulations.

    Pest Assessment

    Our Pest Assessment confirmed:

    • a replacement bird exclusion net was the most cost-effective solution
    • the net needed to allow access to building services located above
    • the net material needed to comply with fire regulations

The area of the required bird exclusion net was 84 metres long and five metres wide. It was located five metres above ground level.

    Our Solution

The building canopy was supported by roof trusses that formed 14 bays along the length of the exclusion net. Lights and fire sprinklers were spaced between each truss and the end trusses were closed off with wire mesh. The net material was a woven polypropylene fabric with a 12mm aperture. Being black it was almost invisible when erected and it was approved for use by the building owner's fire engineers.

The exclusion net was a system of 29 separate overlapping nets. For access to the building services each bay was fitted with a five metre wide retractable net that opened horizontally by sliding along strained wires. Each truss was fitted with a static net clipped to permanent wires that overlapped the retractable nets to make the joins birdproof. The nets were fixed to the wall of the building and attached to the outside edge of the canopy using a flexible rod to ensure this edge was also bird proof.

    Pest Bird: Starlings

Location: Distribution centre, East Tamaki, Auckland

    The Problem

Starlings entering the warehouse to night roost on pipework causing soiling of stock and fittings and nesting in building cavities dropping nesting debris.

    Pest Assessment

Our Pest Assessment confirmed that starlings were gaining access to the building through gaps where structural steel beams supporting an external canopy joined with a main building column. Birds were nesting in a cavity where a steel beam passed through a tilt-slab concrete wall.

    Our Solution

Birds were denied access to the nesting cavity by fitting a plywood panel over the cavity cut to fit the profile of the steel beam. Closing off the main access point was more difficult as the opening was not accessable. This required a series of five structural panels to be made and fitted to the profile of the main column to stop birds getting into the warehouse. These needed custom-made fittings to attach them to the column while still allowing for cable bundles to pass. The fitting of the birdproofing was undertaken above eight metres high.

    Pest Bird: Swallows

    Location: Warehouse, Onehunga, Auckland

    The Problem

Multiple swallows were building their mud nests on brackets supporting the warehouse roof and their droppings were soiling high value stock below.

    Pest Assessment

Our Pest Assessment confirmed that swallows could not be excluded from the building so they had to be denied access to each individual nest site.

    Our Solution

Once the nests had been removed and the brackets cleaned of mud, each bracket was fitted with Thorny Devil bird spikes to prevent the swallows from landing and building their nests. Thorny Devil bird spikes are clear polycarbonate strips that are quick and easy to fit to any surface, can be cut to length, are permanent, maintenance free and almost invisible when installed.

Visit our Thorny Devil pages for more information about these innovative bird deterrents.
